PETCOCKS
This
document will help you to see the differences with the original CJ
petcocks and the poor quality ones that just look like it and can cause
you some troubles.

This picture shows 2 petcocks : the one on the right is the original CJ
one, the one on the left is the poor quality one. Look the same ? Wait
to see what’s next…

Picture 2 gives us some tips to recognize the good one from the bad one
: As you can see they have little differences in shapes. Another tips is
that the poor quality petcock(on the left) has been painted with a
silver paint, when the good one(on the right) has a natural color, no
paint.

Picture 3 shows us another difference of shape between the knob
that allows us to open/close the petcocks. The bad one has a more
beautifully made knob, when the good one has a very rough made one. Some
of the good one come with a different type of knob.

Picture 4 shows us a Chinese character sported by the bad quality
petcock. It is not found on the good one.

You can see clearly that the reserve on the good quality
petcock (right) will allow you to drive longer than the one on the poor
quality petcock (left).

Picture 6 shows us the differences between the good petcock
(right) and the bad one (left) after removal of the bowl. The good
quality one is brass the poor quality one is painted over and it is not
a brass pipe.

Picture 7 shows us the differences between the fuel strainers
located inside the bowl. It is clear that the brass screen on the right
(from the good quality petcock) is of much better quality than the one
found in the poor quality petcock (left).

Picture 9 shows
us inside the petcock after removal of bowl and fuel strainer. What we
see is that the poor quality one (left) has the inside painted and the
good quality one (right) is natural color. Also note the poor quality of
the casting on the poor quality one.

Picture 10 shows the sealing ring for the bowl : obviously the
one on the right from the good petcock is of far better quality than the
one on the left from the poor quality petcock.
The conclusion is :
The poor
quality petcocks are painted inside and outside and that paint peels off
in contact with gasoline and it will clog the petcock and your bike will
not work properly. The poor quality of the sealing ring for the bowl
will make it leak and as its reserve is smaller than on the original
petcock, you’d better be near the gas station if you do not want to push
your bike!
